There are various different styles of Zips to choose from depending on what you require the zip for. Here at Fabric-World we have an excellent range of Zips available, inlcuding the popular brands YKK and Trebla.
Within our selection of Zips we have continuous zipping, metal zips, plastic zips and open end zips so you’re sure to find the right Zip for you. Here are just a few examples of the many zips we stock:
YKK Plastic Open End Zips – These styles of Zips are used when two pieces of fabric being held together need to come apart. These zips are made by popular brand YKK and are available in a range of sizes from 10″ to 30″ with various prices depending on the size you require.
YKK Two Way Zips – These Zips are ideal to be used on items that need both ends of the zip to be ‘closed’. Items such as luggage, bags require this type of zip. Our range of YKK Two Way Zips are available in either black or navy and in a variety of sizes, each varying in price.
Continuous Zipping – This zipping is used when you need a larger amount and is currently only available in beige. Our 3mm Continuous Zipping is priced at 99p per metre.

In general, Zips for a wide variety of different uses ranging from items of clothing to items such as sleeping bags. Choosing the right Zip for the job is essential for ensuring the longevity of whatever item it is being used for. Here at Fabric-World, we stock an extensive range of different types of Zips.
Firstly, it is important to establish the type of Zip you require – the main choices are Closed End Zips, Open End Zips and Continuous Zipping. Here is a guide to the types of Zips that can be purchased and some of their uses:
- Closed End Zips are designed so that both ends of the Zip are ‘closed’. These types of Zips are often used in items like luggage, handbags and some items of clothing where the Zip is not required to come of the track. - Open End Zips are used on items that require the two pieces of material that arebeing held together by the Zip, to come apart. There are many Zips that we have here at Fabric-World for you to choose from, and choosing the correct Zip is essential for whatever garment it is required for. All the Zips that we have available are the highest quality YKK Zips, so you can be guaranteed to get the perfect finish on your garments. Here at Fabric-World we have a couple of options when it comes selecting the right Metal Zips. Both types of Metal Zips that we have in stock are Open End Zips, meaning that the garment can be opened completely.
Here are the two types of Metal Open End Zips that you can choose from:
- Heavy Duty Metal Zip – These Zips are perfect for heavier garments and items such as motorcyle jackets or heavier coats. They come in black only and range in lengths from 14″ to 30″, so almost any garment can be catered for!
- Metal Open End Zip - These Zips are not Heavy Duty, but are still a high quality substantial Zip for your garments.
Metal open end Zips are often found in jackets, coats, bags and even on shoes nowadays as an fashion accessory. The great thing about using YKK metal zips from Fabric-World is that you are getting the best quality zips available. Here at Fabric-World we have a huge range of Zips in stock for you to choose from, and all of them have many different purposes depending on the intended use! We stock a ful range of Open End ips and Closed End Zips, all of them the highest quality YKK Zips available. These Zips are designed to be used either with Dressmaking Fabrics or as replacements Zips (meaning you can prolong the life of your favourite garments!).
We also have Zips such as the Tent Zips, which as the name suggests are perfect for tents or other items that require a longer length of Zip. Another choice should you require a longer length of Zip is our Continous Zipping which can simply be cut to size!
Not only do we stock Zips for garments such as dresses and trouser etc. we also have Zips to cater for other items:
- Two Way Zips – These are for using on garments that require it to be open form both the top and the bottom ends. These are in available in black and navy and come in lengths of 22″ to 30″.
- Reversible Zips – These Zips are used on reversible garments, and means that the Zip Pull can be flipped across to either side with ease. These are attached to garments in the same way as other Zips. Available in black and navy, these come in sizes ranging from 22″ to 30″.

When looking at Zips there are generally two different types. These are known as Open End Zips and Closed End Zips. In todays blog Im going to talk about Closed End Zips and the different types we have available here at Fabric-World.
- Dress Zips: These zips are used in dresses, cushions, tops, skirts and many more applications.
- Jeans Zips: A heavier zip that is used on denim products. These are closed end and available in 4” up to 8”.
- Nickel Trouser Zips: These are also a metal zips, but slightly lighter than the above jeans zips. Ideal to be used in smart suit trousers.
- Cushion Zips: These zips are sold in bags of 100 and come in sizes 12” up to 22”. Ideal if you are looking for a bulk buy option at a great price!!!
- Concealed/Invisable Zips: Used in dressmaking, bridalwear, skirts and many more clothing items. At Calico Laine we offer these zips in sizes from 8” through to 22” in a varierty of colours.
As you can see from above, there are many different types of zips available in the closed end style.
I should mention now the difference between closed end and open end zips. A closed end zip is a zip that dose not open at the bottom (or come apart/seperate). An open end zip in a zip that opens at the bottom and seperates. I hope I have made this clear!!!

A question we often get asked here at Fabric-World is what zip do I need? So this is the topic of todays blog!!!
When it comes to replacing a zips there are some very simple questions that you need to be aware of:
1) Do you need the zips to open at the bottom?
2) What size is the zip you are reaplacing?
3) Intended use for the zip?
Answer 1: If the zip needs to open at the bottom then you are going to need an open ended zip. These are available in metal, nylon and plastic teeth in sizes from 10” up to 36”.
Answer 2: When measuring for your replacement zip the only part you measure is the actual teeth.
Answer 3: What are you planning on using the zip for? If you are using the zip on a motorcycle jacket for example you will need a heavy duty zip, as a light weight one would not last very long. The same can be said going back from this. You would not want to use a metal zip in a dress!!!

In our last blog about the Zips that we Stock here at Fabric-World, we spoke about the large range of Closed End Zips that can be used to suit all your requirements. Today we will be having a look at the range of Open End Zips that we stock, and how they can be used within your Dressmaking or any other purpose that you require the Zips for.
Here are some of the options for Open End Zips:
- Heavy Duty Zips – These Zips are the heaviest duty Zips that we have available, and are most suitable for heavier weight garments such as leather jackets.
- Nylon Open End Zips – These zips come in sizes from 10” up to 36” and are available in a variety of colours.
- Plastic Open End Zip – Available in from 10” through to 36”. Certain colours only available in certain sizes.
- Reversible Zips – These zips can be used on reversible jackets that turn inside out. These are only available in black and navy.
- Two Way Zips – A zip that opens from both the top and bottom. These are commonly used in jackets and cardigans.

When you have created garments using Dressmaking Fabrics, the finishing touch is often choosing the correct Zip! Here at Fabric-World, we stock a wide range of YKK Zips for you to use with your Dressmaking Fabrics, and our sales team will be more than happy to help you select the right Zip.
The Zips that we have in stock are either Open End Zips or Closed End Zips and each of them serve different purposes for with your Dressmaking Fabrics:
- Open End Zips – These Zips are used when it is required for the garment to open fully. Examples of this would be on either jackets or coats and some of the Open End Zips we have available are Heavy Duty Metal Zips, Brass Zips and Nylon Open End Zips.
