Buttons can generally be described as a fastener, and serve many practical purposes within clothes and dressmaking. Garments that often have buttons for these reasons are items such as jackets, cardigans and trousers. Buttons work by being sewn onto one side of the garments and then passing through either a loop or a buttonhole to fasten two side of the garment together. Generally buttons are made from plastic, but there are other alternatives that can be made from metal and other sturdy materials.

As well as being used on clothing, buttons are also commonly added to accessories such as bag and wallets. Mostly, buttons are used for practical purposes on clothing and accessories, but in the world of fashion, buttons are also a very popular form of decoration. Stylish buttons can be used to add ornamentation to garments such as shirts and tops and can really transform a garment!
